ABOUT THE BLUE MOMENTS PROJECT

Jazz. Blues. Words.

“The minor key / the drawn out note / the colour of bruise / the taste of smoke” -- 'The Blues'

What happens when a writer and a musician work, really work, together?

‘Blue Moments’ is the result of a multi-year collaboration between writer Laura Williamson and composer Angela Mote, which produced a sequence of works that gives new meaning to the phrase “music and lyrics”.

Some spoken, some instrumental and some sung, the ‘Blue Moments’ pieces range from haunting to soulful to funny. Working from Laura’s poems, which explore what it is to be foreign and what it means to become a New Zealander, Angela took both literal and rhythmic cues to interpret the original writing as music.

Performed by a five-piece band comprised of Graeme Perkins on piano, Jeff Sinnott on drums, Angela Mote on flute and saxophone, Dominic Stayne on upright bass, and with Queenstown-based jazz/blues singer Karen Hattaway on vocals, the result is something as beautiful as it is unexpected.

TOUR NEWS: The Blue Moments Project is heading out on a three-town tour in September and October. Read about The Blue Spaces mini tour here.
